The 6 Card Types
Standard

DEF Basic
Recreates a player involved in the current season. The most common Card Type, and you can get it by spending GP. Experienced players once used it too, but today it suits beginners and new players.
Trending
Recreates a player who starred in a specific match, with Player Stats reflecting that match. It helps your team the moment you sign it, but it cannot be trained further, and it cannot take new skills.
That does not make it better than Highlight. A Highlight card can be developed a long way, and at max level it can pass a Trending card. Still, being ready without training makes Trending popular with players who do not spend.
Featured
Recreates a player involved in the current season, in the same way as Standard. Compared to the Standard player with the same name, these hand-picked players have different Player Stats and Playing Styles. No new Featured cards are being released right now.
Highlight
Also a player from the current season, hand-picked and stronger than the Standard card with the same name. New ones arrive every week based on real matches. It can be developed further than Featured, so training makes it much stronger.
You get it by spending, or as an event reward such as a Nominating Contract.
Legendary
Recreates a player who starred in a specific season, which lets even a retired star appear. Epic is the main type now, and no new Legendary cards are being released.
Epic

DEF Attack Outlet
Recreates a player who starred in a specific season, in the same way as Legendary, but it can be developed further, so the Overall Rating grows a lot. Very strong, and it mainly needs spending, though some Epic cards come free from events.
The two special kinds
These are not separate Card Types in the game. Each is a special kind of Highlight or Epic.
Highlight - Show Time

DEF Basic
A special kind of Highlight. Compared to other Highlight players with the same name, these have higher Player Stats, and some have new skills. Most need spending, though some come free from events.
Epic - Big Time

DEF Basic
A special kind of Epic, with a unique design commemorating a specially selected match. The player may do the goal celebration from that match, and there may be specific commentary too. It is the rarest kind of card, and you can only get it by spending.
Same player, different card: Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi appears in all 6 Card Types and both special kinds. The highest Max Overall Rating in each one runs from 93 to 106, so check the Card Type as well as the name before you sign a player.
Which Card Type is the strongest?
On overall potential, the strongest is Epic - Big Time, followed by Epic and Highlight - Show Time. All of them mainly need spending, so spending is the shortest way to the very top.
If you do not spend much, Highlight and Highlight - Show Time are the realistic targets through event rewards. If you want a player who is ready now, Trending is an option, as long as you accept that it cannot be trained.
